Breathe DC Urges Tobacco Control Funding

Breathe DC urges the DC Council to fund tobacco control

On June 5, 2020, Rolando Andron, President and CEO of Breathe DC, submitted written testimony to the D.C. Council Health Committee urging the committee to recommend level funding for DC Health's tobacco control programs.

The harm caused by cigarette smoking is devastating. It is the only product that if used as intended will kill. Each year more than 700 adults over 35 years of age die in the region as a result of tobacco-related illnesses and diseases.

Breathe DC is urging the Health Commission to continue funding the district's tobacco control programs at $1.9 million — the level recommended by the mayor's budget. The funding will give the region an opportunity to reduce its smoking rate to less than 20%, and will have a significant impact on reducing millions of dollars spent on annual health care expenses caused by tobacco in the region.
