EBT is a verb!

In 2007, when neuroscientist Igor Mitrovic, clinical research professor Linda Frassetto, then-medical student Lindsay Fish, and I discovered cognitive behavioral therapy, we had no idea what to call it.

I have been practicing nursing since 1978, which is a method of processing emotions based on three levels of stress. The previous version of this method was called “The Solution,” but we have now expanded the skill set to include the full range of stress situations and brain circuit training. At a research meeting, a famous psychiatry professor advised me, "You can't call it the solution. It seems so exaggerated that researchers will want to devote their time to studying it."

At the time, I had some wires of my own that needed to be erased, including a fear of offending the academic establishment. Plus, I admired and trusted this woman and thought she might be right.

What do we call it?

Our collaborative team met and paused. Dr. Mitrovic said the method now covers the plasticity (and thus rewiring) of the entire emotional brain, which is the seat of the soul, survival, physiology, and health. We settled on emotional brain training, as the brain only changes with experience. As therapists become certified in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (EBT) as the new psychotherapy in neuroscience, we can call it Emotional Brain Therapy. However, there was something beyond therapy about these tools: they were necessary and useful in many ways, as they unleashed our immense power to rewire the elusive unconscious mind.

Of course, it was important who operated the tools, and even today, we train and certify health professionals in this method. 30-minute training sessions stimulate the brain to heal itself. They are intimate and effective.

The brain needs a little structure

My hope was to bring the new 12-step method to neuroscience, with CBT support groups in every neighborhood. I liked the idea of ​​free therapy, where EBT rewires the same circuits that cause addiction as well as mental and physical health issues. However, we investigated the use of self-help groups, and a year-long study showed that they worked. The work was deep enough to be transformative, and disrupting the old cycle needed a provider to create structure, consistency, consultation, and support. We went back to the drawing board and added a dedicated health professional as a group facilitator, and participants thrived, remaining in the group for an average of 57 weeks.

Although it is often said that it takes 30 days to change a habit, it takes one year to change the emotional brain set point. However, training the brain to move away from the default state of stress and favor familiarity with joy, flow, peace, and power, takes time. Without this change in set point, the "usually" Changes either don't last or last, but the brain encodes an equally unhealthy alternative.

Our original plan for the name of the method – Emotional Brain Training – has proven correct based on the results of the research that followed. This method was the new medicine, the foundation of health care, so we called it emotional brain training. Until recently, I thought of EBT as a name. Then, this morning, I was relaxing, reading the newspaper, an old habit I still cherish. It is undoubtedly comforting to enjoy the tangible pleasure of turning pages over morning coffee and chatting with my husband, Walt. I read some particularly delicious lines to him. . . He returns with some words of wisdom that we can all marvel at together!

It was a story about the newly opened Notre Dame church in Paris and how it matched the grain of the wood, tree by tree, and I thought, "These architects were very persistent. They should be EBTed frequently."

EBT has become a verb
