Which Type Of Engineering Should You Study?

As you can probably tell, not every degree is for everyone! This article will talk about which type of engineering you should consider studying and why.

Understand what each field means to get some insight into whether an individual degree program is right for you or if you should look elsewhere. Some types of engineering are more focused than others, so pick carefully!

Which Type Of Engineering Should You Study?

Here we’ll go over different types of engineering and what each one entails to make sure you understand the fundamental concepts. After that, we’ll discuss some pros and cons of each career path to help determine which one makes the most sense for you.

Computer engineering

If you are passionate about technology, then studying computer science or engineering is an excellent choice. These studies focus more on how the software works and the components that make up computers, as well as how to use them!

Computer engineers design everything from desktop apps like Microsoft Office to mobile apps such as Instagram and smartphones. They also study robotics and electrical engineering, which have a strong emphasis on those areas.

Robotics focuses on designing robots for fun or practical uses. Electrical engineering looks at creating new electronic products and applications with electricity.

Electrical engineering

Electrical engineers are trained in physics, mathematics, psychology, computer science, and fluid mechanics. They are also trained in how to apply their knowledge to work on electronics (which is what most people associate them with).

But before people could use the electricity they first had to be able to identify it! That’s why most electrical engineers have a degree in either electrical or electronic technology. These two degrees focus more narrowly on components rather than whole systems.

Computer science

Having an advanced degree in computer science can be great for your career. Most large companies now require at least some level of certification or bachelor’s degree in software engineering, which is typically considered to be one of the top computer science majors.

Computer scientists develop algorithms and technology that automate tasks and are integral parts of almost every major field. They also design computer systems and apps from scratch, so they know the ins and outs of both.

Engineering management

As we learned before, engineering is a very diverse field that covers many different areas. Some engineers design products or systems to work under specific conditions, while others develop new technologies or software programs.

Engineering managers are the ones who oversee the implementation and use of these tools in various industries. They make sure everything goes according to plan!

Their jobs can vary as well. Some manage production lines, while others supervise IT departments or logistics operations.

The important thing to note about all engineering managers is that they’re always thinking about ways to improve the functioning of their department or organization.

This includes finding efficient methods for producing or creating products, developing better internal processes and technology, and figuring out how to get things done more quickly and efficiently.

It also means looking at the bigger picture and understanding the effects that what you do has on other parts of an industry or company.

Industrial engineering

Like the human-centred design, industrial engineering focuses on improving the efficiency or effectiveness of systems that work with energy. Systems to look out for include manufacturing processes, business models, technology infrastructure, and organizational structures.

Industrial engineers are trained in mathematics, science, and the humanities, but most pursue at least a master’s degree in either engineering management (which is more formal than ordinary engineering) or industrial engineering.

Both fields apply tools from the other two major areas — engineering and marketing — to help achieve efficient operations. This includes things like cost analysis, process optimization, and improved service delivery.

Engineers who specialize in industrial engineering tend to focus on optimizing the functioning of facilities and factories, while those who study engineering management tackle how companies run their departments and functions.

Engineering psychology

As we’ve discussed, engineering is a very diverse field that covers lots of different areas. Some of these areas include mechanical, electrical, chemical, computer science, etc.

But there’s one area in particular that many people don’t really consider to be part of engineering – something that’s often referred to as an “engineering discipline.” That is, how do I help you feel better about yourself?

A lot of times, what engineers design products are totally utilitarian – things like cars or smartphones that appeal more to functionality than they do beauty. But when technology has advanced enough so that it can actually perform certain functions automatically, why not use it for good instead of evil?

That’s where technologies designed to enhance human performance come into play. These tools improve mental efficiency (for example, by helping you focus), increase motivation, reduce stress, and promote overall wellness.

They’re sometimes called _ergonometrics_ —which comes from the Greek word for work and _metron_, which means measure. So ergonomic engineering gets its name because it helps you achieve optimal productivity while also promoting health and happiness.

There are several fields within this category, such as industrial-organizational psych, medical engineering, neuroscience, and even human–computer interaction. What they all have in common is that they study how to apply engineering principles to understand and influence behaviour.
